Much though I love the character, I have to admit Locke isn't that great in battle. He's very quick, but his attack power and magic power are both fairly low, and he doesn't have a great defense. Steal is also not all that useful (unlike later Final Fantasy games); usually it yields only a Potion or Antidote, and Stealing is difficult without the Thief Knife, Sneak Ring, and Thief Glove. Regardless, I tend to keep Locke in my party a lot because he is key to many plot points.
